About Les

FROM CRAFTING TIMBER SURBOARDS

Wood Craftsman

Les's initial experience with recycling and crafting timber started when he was just a grommet in 1962, at the age of 10 when he and local Warilla Barrack Point surfer craftsman "the Strong Brothers", Vic and Ken. Together, they salvaged, stripped, reshaped, and reglassed a 9ft 6” classic balsa Malibu from the renowned surfboard shaper Barry Bennett to suit Les's style. During the process to their surprise, they found a cedar inlay design on the nose of the board.

A custom-styled fin was layered up in pink filla coat resin and fibreglass to suit the performance of the smaller surfboards design.

The balsa timbers were imported from the forests of Ecuador in the mid 50’s.

Steam Punk Signs and Furniture

Trained as a sign craftsman in free hand-written and gold-leaf signage, Les has incorporated recycled timbers with a blend of neon and sandblasted technique finishes into his custom sign designs.

Les has had a strong interest for many years in dismantling, salvaging, relocating, and renovating old timber cottages. These 100-year-old structures are made entirely of timber, including hoop pine and hardwood linings and weatherboards, T&G flooring and framing timbers.

Salvaging and cleaning the old sand stock bricks from the cottage's fireplaces. These bricks make great pavers.
